The Mazda-powered Dyson Racing team wins its first ever American Le Mans Series race in grand form on Saturday. Chris Dyson and Guy Smith won the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Challenge in the #16 Castrol Mazda Lola coupe, setting a new race record. Dyson set the car’s fastest lap four laps from the end.
The all-new Mazda AER (Advanced Engine Research) engine is based on the MZR-R found in many production Mazdas such as the 2010 Mazda3. The 2.0 liter, four-cylinder in-line turbocharged engine delivers more than 500 hp and more than 400 lb-ft of torque.
Combining very low mass with a small physical footprint, the engine is the smallest, lightest and most compact in LMP racing today and there are no external belt drives or ancillaries. The camshafts, water pump and oil pump are internally driven by gears.
The current B09/86 LMP Coupe is a one-piece carbon composite monocoque and is certified to ACO and FIA structural standards through 2012. The body panels are lightweight pre-preg carbon composite construction. The suspension is double wishbone with pushrod/rocker-activated coil spring/adjustable damper units all around. The six-speed sequential gearbox is lightweight cast magnesium and is designed to allow complete changes of gear ratios in ten minutes without losing any oil.
Dyson Racing won an absolute classic race Saturday in the American Le Mans Series as Chris Dyson held off Patrón Highcroft Racing’s Simon Pagenaud by 0.506 second in the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Challenge. Dyson and Guy Smith each won overall in the series for the first time, as did their Castrol-liveried, Mazda-powered Lola B09/86 coupe.
After Intersport Racing’s Clint Field dominated for the first two hours, Dyson led the final 24 laps in one of the best races the series has seen. Dyson Racing won overall at Mid-Ohio in 2005, a race where Mazda also won its first ALMS race, in the LMP2 class.
Pagenaud and David Brabham were runners-up for the second straight race but maintained their LMP championship lead. Field and father Jon were third in LMP after the car failed to restart in pit lane.
